Dog collars are an important piece of equipment for owning a dog. Not only are they used to train and walk a dog, but they are crucial for identification.
Also dog collars can be a way for an owner to express their dog’s sense of fashion.
When buying a dog collar it’s important to ensure they are a proper fit for the dog. Measure the circumference of the dog’s neck and add two inches so that the collar will have room to adjust. The collar’s width is also important. It should be wide enough that it will be comfortable for the dog (not like a cord) but not so wide that it will interfere with the dog’s everyday activities like eating and drinking.
Most collars are made from a nylon blend, leather, or chain. Nylon is comfortable for most dogs, but stronger dogs that are tougher on their collars should opt for durable leather collars. Chain collars are also normally reserved for big dogs and should only be used for training.
Inspect the collar closely before buying. If the collar is made from a colorful material, ensure that the dye won’t bleed onto the dog’s coat. Rhinestones, studs, and other adornments are a fun addition to fashionable collars, but check to make sure they are securely attached as they can pose as a choking hazard if they become detached.
There are several different types of collars available and the kind that is needed will depend on what the dog’s daily habits are and where they are in training. Here is a list of common types of collars and their purpose:
•Chain slip collar- Also known as choke chains, these collars should be used for training purposes only. The collar tightens around the dog’s neck if they pull on the leash. They are useful for bigger dogs, but have fallen out of favor by most dog trainers because of the cruel choking effect. Dogs should never be left unattended in a chain slip collar.
•Metal prong collar-These also go by another name- pinch collars. They are very intimidating in appearance and operate in a similar manner to the chain slip collar. These are for strong, stubborn dogs that pull on the leash. This type of collar should also only be used for training purposes and the dog should never be left unattended while wearing one.
•Martingale or Greyhound collar- This collar also tightens with a tug on the leash but has a stopping mechanism to prevent choking. It is primarily used for sight hounds but is suitable for most types of dogs.
•Regular use collar- This is your everyday standard collar. They are available with metal buckles or quick release clasps. Buckles work best for bigger dogs, while the quick release clasps are easy to put on and remove. The material is usually nylon or leather. The leather collar is more durable and is less likely to cause hair loss.
•Breakaway collars- These collars designed for safety. If the collar gets caught on something the collar will break away, allowing the dog to escape. These can still be used with leashes, just make sure the leash is attached to both loops.
•Head collars- Sometimes also called halters; these collars look like muzzles but have an entirely different purpose. If a dog pulls on the leash with this collar on it will turn the dog around, discouraging the pulling. These leashes are a great way to gently train a dog to walk on a leash.
•Harness- This is not so much a collar because it goes around the chest and abdomen of the dog. Harnesses are sometimes said to encourage pulling. Harnesses are good for dogs with neck or airway disorders though.
The most important thing about a collar is that it has a loop for the leash to attach, and for the tags to hang. Tags are a necessity to protect your dog. Not only do they provide the dog’s name, but they should include the owner’s information so the dog can be returned safely, and also vaccination information.
Shopping for a dog collar can be fun, and a pet owner will find there are lots of fun styles, colors, and patterns out there. So have fun and feel free to let the dog express himself with his stylish new collar!
