Dog doors are a great convenience item for any dog owner. They allow your dog to let itself in and out of the house without your help. This is a great thing for dogs that don’t want to sleep all night. It is also reassuring for dog owners who are away for most of the day at work. If your dog needs to go to the bathroom, it can let itself out instead of leaving a mess for you to clean up.
Dog doors come in two main styles, there is the flap style, which is simpler and easier to install. And there is the full blown hinged doggy door. In a flap style door an opening is created in a normal door at ground level. This opening is then covered with a plastic flap. The weight of the flap you want to use will vary based on your climate and dog size. A German Shepherd in northern Minnesota would warrant a heavy door, both because the dog can open it and because the weather calls for it. A Chihuahua in Florida on the other hand would want a small lightweight door.
Hinged dog doors are more complex than the flap style. Instead of nailing a flap to a hole in your door, these apparatus attempt to function as a part of the door. They come with a hard surfaced panel that is affixed to the door along the top edge with hinges. Dual-direction hinges are used, much like the ones you see in use on a restaurant’s kitchen door. The hinges are also counter-weighted so that the door closes itself once your dog is out. If you are planning to install a new door in any event, it is a great idea to get one with a dog door like this built into it.
