Dog Kennels

Dog kennels are not a new idea. In fact they are centuries old. The term dog kennel can refer to a few different things. In modern day America a kennel can refer to a professionally run boarding facility for dogs. These facilities are where you can take your pet to stay while you go on vacation.  They offer grooming and daily exercise, and personal attention for your dog.

The term dog kennel is used differently in British English. In England, a dog kennel is what we refer to as a dog house.  The dog house as we know it also originated in England. It was popularized there, but it turned into an icon under American popular culture. The two iconic references to dog kennels in American culture are the peanuts cartoons, and Loony Toons animated shorts.

In peanuts, Snoopy famously sleeps on top of his doghouse. The house is a small affair with a peaked roof that just fits the dog. In Loony Toons, several characters interact with a big, mean bulldog. He happened to live in a dog house in almost every episode. These two references cemented the rectangle with a peaked roof as the stereotypical dog kennel. Unsurprisingly, that is the most popular type of dog house to this day.

However the peaked roof house is far from the only option available to dog owners who want to buy a new kennel. Wood is still the most popular medium for a dog house, but there are others available as well. The first example of an alternative style is the flat panel roof. Instead of a peaked roof, this dog kennel sports a flat one, similar to many southwestern style homes. This design is great for areas that don’t see snow fall during the year. An innovation that would make Snoopy proud is also available. You can add a staircase to the side of your flat paneled dog house to let your dog lay on top of the house instead of inside.

Plastic dog kennels have become readily available in recent decades. They tout such features as nitrogen insulation, ready- out of the box use, and structural foam construction. The lower end of plastic dog kennels is probably about as inexpensive as you can get. But there are higher end models that can be quite pricey. In addition to the wooden shapes, you can get a plastic igloo doghouse. Not all plastic doghouses are ready to use, but in most cases the assembly required is minimal.

A rarity in these times is a metal dog house. If you think they would be suffocating and hot in the summer, while frigid in the winter, you would be wrong. These houses are high end, built with heavy insulation to keep the hot, or cold, out and keep your dog comfortable. They are nearly indestructible, and if you have a dog that likes to chew, it won’t be able to chew up a metal home.

One last concept for a dog house comes for those looking for a unique aesthetic take on a dog’s living quarters. You can buy dog houses that have been refurbished from old packing barrels. The interior is refinished and insulated, one end has a hole carved into it, and the exterior is weather coated. These barrels won’t work for a large or even medium dog, but if you have a small dog, they can make an ideal and unique home.
