Dog Toys

Dog toys are a huge industry within the pet world. So much so that when you think of toys for pets you almost inevitably come up with a toy for a dog. Fish toys? Don’t be silly. Snake toys? Never! Even cats aren’t considered all that playful on a regular basis. But dogs love to play, and they will make a toy out of anything you let them use. Consider that old shoe your dog has just decided to become acquainted with, or ask any puppy owner what their dog thinks of the electrical cords in the house.

This propensity for making a chew toy out of anything and everything is a major reason that dog toys exist. The majority of early toys were made to give a dog something that they could chew on without damaging the owner’s property.  The squeak toy that everyone immediately associates with dog toys is the perfect example. The dog chews on the toy, slobbers all over it, and leaves your shoes, cords, and remotes alone. Everybody wins, especially the TV.

Another type of dog toy is similarly simple to find. I’m talking about the fetch toy. These toys were originally designed as a training device for hunting dogs. When the dog’s owner shot a bird, the dog needed to be trained to retrieve the bird for the owner. To aid in this the owner would condition the dog to receive a reward for bringing back an item to the owner. The first fetch toys were sticks. They were free; you just picked one from the ground and started working with your dog. Later people began using balls to train their dogs. In modern times, dogs that will never go hunting still enjoy “playing” fetch with their owners. This affinity is largely dependent on the species in question; many species of dogs show little to no natural inclination to chase a thrown object. They can be trained with a system of reward and punishment to play fetch, but this is much easier to do if they already want to do it.

Maybe your dog likes to shred your morning newspaper. They more than likely just want something to tug on. The paper is just failing to provide adequate resistance and so it gets shredded. Consider buying a knotted rope for your pooch. These ropes make excellent toys; they are cheap and will provide endless entertainment for your dog. If you ever doubt this, pick up one end of the rope and let the dog grab the other end. Instant tug of war that the dog absolutely loves!

Perhaps your dog is above all this though. Your pet has a sense of style. No mere ball or piece of string will entertain your dog, it will not settle for less than the very best. Well then consider the world of designer pet merchandise. With clever names like Barkney’s New Yorkie,  Muttstercard, Ruff Lauren, Growlex, and iPaw; your pet can enjoy the very best names in fashion and design.
