Dog treats are perhaps second only to meal time as the favorite part of a dog’s day. Any dog owner will tell you how excited a good treat makes their dog. But what should you look for in a treat? Well that depends on the breed of your dog, its health, and its age. Most importantly, it should be a treat your dog loves.
Some dog treats are medicinal, or at least meant to help your dog while they enjoy the treat. For instance rawhide treats scrub a dog’s teeth and gums while the dog gnaws on them. There are also treats that claim to improve your dog’s breath. A common treatment for heartworms comes in treat form, because getting a dog to take medicine is a tricky affair.
Other times a treat is just that, a reward for your dog’s good behavior. For those cases it’s important to have treats that are healthy for your dog. There are a variety of organic and specially formulated dog-health treats. While you may not feel the need to go to that end of the spectrum, your dog will not fare well if you feed it strips of bacon as a treat either. So investigate the nutritional information of the treats you buy for your dog.
