Hamster care begins with selecting a suitable cage or aquarium large enough for your pet. Cover the cage floor with a 2 inch layer of absorbent bedding such as timothy hay, aspen shavings, or shredded paper. Hamsters like to hide and sleep inside enclosed spaces, so provide a small box with an entrance hole for this purpose. Be sure to change bedding frequently and wash the cage at least once a week.
Keep a filled, clean water bottle attached to the cage at a height where the spout is reachable by the hamster, but doesn't touch the bedding. If the bedding gets wet it can rot and cause your hamster to get sick. Wash and refill daily.
Feed your hamster a commercially prepared hamster-food mix once or twice a day. Supply a small amount of fresh fruits and vegetables and other treats for variety.
Exercise your hamster by putting an exercise wheel in the cage. Allowing your hamster to run around outside the cage in a secure room or inside a specially designed plastic hamster ball are other great ways to guarantee it gets plenty of exercise. For entertainment and to keep your hamster’s teeth healthy provide plenty of chew toys.
Hamsters are perfect pets. They are lovable, small, and they are easy and inexpensive to keep. An adequate living environment, proper diet and plenty of exercise are among some of the most important things to ensure your hamster lives a long and healthy life.
