Pet doors can be mounted on existing doors or can be installed into walls. Installing them on doors is most common, but the door is ruined in the process. Many people choose to install wall mounted doors because they look nicer and can be removed without any evidence that they were ever there. They are more difficult to install and a bit more expensive, but they offer much more security than one installed in a door.
Security is a big concern for many people when considering pet doors. Not only will a beloved pet be able to enter and exit at will, but other animals such as raccoons could possibly enter as well. Many have a specialized door that only unlocks when a special collar on the pet is near the door. This prevents people from reaching inside and unlocking the door from the inside, a problem that cannot occur on a wall mounted pet door.
Pet doors should be mounted a little higher than the shoulders of the pet and they should be wider than their shoulders as well. For a wall mounted door it is advised to get a door that is a little bit larger as the pet will have to negotiate a small tunnel as long as the thickness of the wall. Many wall mounted doors have two door flaps which further seals out moisture and weather.
