Pet food is an essential part of any pet’s life. Whether you have a traditional pet like a dog or cat; or your tastes run to the more exotic like bearded dragons or ball pythons; all pets have one thing in common: they need to eat. But within that singular consistency there is a lot of leeway. What’s best for your pet? That’s no easy question to answer.
Your pet’s food will depend on the kind of pet you have, and on your budget. Some pets, such as
dogs, cats, or rodents, need to eat every day. Rodents are primarily herbivores, although they are known to eat insects in the wild when they are available. Cats are primarily carnivorous, as are dogs. The nutrients each breed needs to be healthy differ, and if you’re not sure what’s best for your pet, consult a veterinarian.
Exotic pets feature similarly exotic pet food. Reptiles eat far less frequently than mammals do. This is because they are cold blooded, and do not need to continuously burn calories to maintain their body heat. Most reptiles are carnivorous, smaller ones such as iguanas and bearded dragons will eat crickets and other insects; or baby mice if they are a large adult. Larger reptiles such as ball pythons will eat adult mice or other mammals of that size.
