A pet gate is a good way to keep your pet out of areas of the house they shouldn’t be in. They are also a great training aid for your pet. For instance, when trying to train a dog to go outside to use the bathroom, it is best to keep them in a large room with the exit to the house in it. Gate off all the other exits to the room and encourage your dog to go towards the outside when it looks like they need to use the bathroom.
Pet gates often don’t have to be used permanently, even when they are used to block off an area of the house. A gate can just be a training aid to teach a dog to stay out of a certain area. Once the dog knows the area is off limits, you can remove the gate and simply say no in a firm voice if the look like they want to go in there. After a few weeks of this, the dog will not go into that room because the prohibition will be ingrained into them.
Pet gates operate on the same principle as a toddler gate. They are a plastic lattice that is formed of two panels connected at top and bottom by rails. They have pads on either side to keep from scratching the surfaces they touch. The gates adjust along the rails to the desired width, and can then be locked at that width to hold them in place. For any animal that does not have good climbing or jumping abilities, they will be a good barrier.
