Small dogs are often thought of children by their owners. They are often pampered and protected to an extent not normally reserved for dogs of larger stature. It is for this reason that manufacturers of dog clothes tend to cater to this specific market.
Small dog costumes come in an amazingly wide variety of designs. Nearly all manner of apparel designed for their human owners can also be found for their small pets. T-shirts, jackets, pajamas, and even shoes are commonly purchased to ensure that these pets are on the cutting edge of doggy fashion.
Winter is a harsh time to be a small dog. Not only is their fur coat usually less dense than larger canines, their smaller size means that they lose their natural body heat much faster as well. Many dog owners compensate for this by purchase sweaters and/or jackets made specifically for canines. These items can be traditional knit type fabrics, emulating the typical human sweater, or can be made from other materials as well. Cotton hoodies are especially popular nowadays due to their more rugged construction.
Small dog costumes also include a variety of coats and jackets as well. Inexpensive versions often use materials like corduroy, or occasionally synthetic materials like vinyl for their exteriors. The linings can be anything from polyester/cotton blends to faux lamb’s wool. However, those looking for high end fashions can often find these coats made from expensive furs and leather. Many manufacturers make doggie coats from the same high-tech materials found in some of today’s top ski parkas.
Dresses are popular small dog costumes for the little canine princesses of the world. Any doggie fashionista would be proud to wear a fashionable sun dress on a warm summer’s day. If you plan on taking your dog out for a night on the town, perhaps a satin evening gown would be more appropriate? Other popular dress designs for a small dog include corset dresses, school girl outfits, and even high-fashion polo dresses. Many of today’s human fashion designers offer their own lines for pets as well.
Holidays are the perfect occasions for small dog costumes. Santa costumes (for both Mr. and Mrs. Claus), as well as those for elves, are extremely popular for the Christmas holiday season. Halloween, however, is definitely the most popular season for costumes. There are quite literally hundreds of costume options for your little ones during the Halloween season. Devils and Jack-O-Lantern themed costumes are very popular, as are skeletons. For those looking for something a little bit less “scary” there are other options such as lady bugs, cheerleaders, football players, and even food items like tacos.
Of all the available doggie apparel, collars are still the most ubiquitous. Designer collars can be made from anything ranging from leather to satin. They often incorporate precious and semi-precious stones, making them sometimes rather expensive, like any other piece of jewelry. Less expensive versions often include spikes (for the boys) and glitter (for the girls). For real fashion hounds, an assortment of collars might be required in order to dress properly for any occasion that might occur.
